Longwood History: 200 Years of du Pont Gardening

The Brandywine Valley is home to some of America's greatest gardens, created by the celebrated du Pont family. After a brief introduction to some of the area's horticultural treasures, you will discover the rich history of Longwood Gardens, from its beginning as a simple farm to today's showplace of plants, fountains, and crystal palaces.

Colvin Randall, P.S. du Pont Fellow

Colvin Randall received a master's degree in ornamental horticulture form The Longwood Program in conjunction with the University of Delaware. He then joined Longwood in 1977 as Publicity Coordinator and in 1980 began designing the Gardens' musical fountain displays and fireworks. Colvin was named Historian and Information Manager in 2004 and P.S. du Pont Fellow in 2008. He has authored seven Longwood books and two DVDs. After 50 years of studying Longwood's history as a student then employee, Colvin is still uncovering fascinating stories to tell.
